Peter Murphy was born in Washington, DC; spent his childhood in Ohio; returned to Washington, DC for his university education; and moved to his grandparent’s home in Bryans Road in 1975.
Peter began his career as a microbiologist for the National Institutes of Health. His work there helped him to discover a strong interest in teaching and education. He taught science and math at General Smallwood Middle School in Indian Head for a number of years and later moved on to direct a large educational testing program at George Washington University.
Peter and a colleague started their own company which specialized in providing training and organizational development services to businesses and other organizations. One aspect of the firm involved conflict resolution, which he developed into a mediation practice. Peter eventually directed mediation services for the Prince George’s County Circuit Court.
In addition to a highly successful career, Peter has always devoted significant time and energy to volunteer commitments. Much of his service has been related to his interests in health, human services and education, including aging, mental health, AIDS, and foster care. Peter founded the Foster Children’s Support Fund and has, himself, been a foster parent. He is also an active member of the Democratic Party.
Peter is a charter member of the Conservancy for Charles County, Inc. He also participated in the Mattawoman Creek Citizens Advisory Committee. He has served with distinction on the Charles County Planning Commission, the Council on Aging, the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Comprehensive Plan, and Senior Services of Charles County, Inc.
Peter has both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree from the American University, and an Ed.S. Degree in Counseling from George Washington University.
Finally, and most importantly to Peter, he is the proud parent of two beautiful daughters, Mollie and Katie who have made him a grandfather four times over. His first grandchild, Bryce, was born in September 2006, to Katie and John Edelen. Bryce’s brother Ryan joined the family in September 2011. Mollie is mother to Peter’s only granddaughter, Maddie, born in March 2009, and grandson Xavier, born in July 2013 with her husband Shaun Marble. They are the fourth generation of Peter’s family to call Charles County home!
